Uranium is a weakly radioactive metal that occurs naturally in many different minerals. Levels of uranium in water sources fluctuate depending on rock formations in the area as well as human activity. Most of the uranium that is ingested through food or drink is excreted by the human body, but some amounts are absorbed into the bloodstream and kidneys. Uranium decreases the kidneys’ ability to filter toxins from the bloodstream, which can lead to negative health effects such as cancer and kidney damage. These health problems are caused primarily by chemical damage rather than the radioactivity of uranium. 

Uranium can enter your water supply naturally from dissolving rocks and soil, though high levels of uranium found in water supplies are most often caused by human activity. Residential, industrial, and agricultural activities such as the burning of fossil fuels, mining of minerals, and overuse of phosphate fertilizers can cause uranium to enter water supplies.
